Maria Cárdenas has been invited to exhibit at the CraftBoston Show in the USA this spring. The show is run by the The Society of Arts & Crafts, (founded in 1897), in the Seaport World Trade Center, Boston MA from April 8-11. Maria has been invited every year since 2006.
The Latina designer, based at her studio in the Mournes, is one of two Irish based invitees-the other is Roger Bennett from Dublin. www.rogerbennettwoodturner.com/ A few years ago both were also in an Irish group juried for the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show.
“I want to keep up contact with Boston and the US, to see established clients and meet some new ones. At present there is a renewed interest in elegant, well made, wearable clothes. I also want to make contact with US/Irish connections from here.”
Maria was invited recently to join the Irish Linen Guild, and be a part of the great tradition of a natural beautiful fabric, and of the expertise developed in Ireland over the centuries.
“Based in the North, among the Mournes, I have been able to keep my feet on the ground over the last few years. I wanted to source fabric and produce in Ireland where possible, and to design and make elegant wearable clothes that last.”
Maria Cárdenas uses natural fabrics- Irish Linen, Satin and Silk, Tweeds and Cotton. She shows her tailoring expertise, making handcrafted shirts, jackets, coats, dresses…
A third generation tailor, the designs are based on simple, well defined shapes, developed over many years. Maria has been approached for an outfit for the Ulster Museum Fashion Collection. Last year she was invited to take part in fashion weeks in Milan, Croatia, and Dublin. Maria Cárdenas features in the Masters of Linen brochure, produced by the Paris and New York based organization to promote European Linen.
